Nicaragua, at over 18,000 square miles, is the largest country in
Central America. It is bordered by Honduras at the north and Costa
Rica at the south. The Caribbean is on the East Coast and the Pacific
Ocean is on the West Coast. There are a number of small islands off
the Caribbean Coast surrounded by coral reefs. The largest group of
these islands is the Islas Del Maiz (Corn Islands) situated 44 miles
off the coast. Big Corn Island has an airstrip on its 6 square miles.
Little Corn Island is 10 miles to the north and is only 1 square miles.
Nicaragua has had a troubled past but now is enjoying a lasting peace
with a stable democracy. There are no travel restrictions and policing
is the most moderate in Central America. Nicaraguans are friendly and
helpful people. While Spanish is the Mainland language, English is the
prime language of the Islands.
